It is designed to deliver a strong academics and practical foundation for students to become active global citizens and specialists in Chinese development.

Why MID?

Educating Development Professionals
In 2009, Tsinghua University was selected by the Master’s of Development Practice (MDP) program, created by the MacArthur Foundation in the United States, as one of eleven universities worldwide, and the only university in China, to launch a Master’s program with the goal of cultivating a new generation of international development professionals.

With its location in Beijing, China, the MID Program harnesses the unique experiences of Chinese expert, scholars and practitioners of development from an international perspective with an emphasis on Chinese practices and sustainable development.

With the integration of the School of Public Policy and Management’s resources, around 40 courses will be offered in the two-year degree program. Students can choose to undertake the curriculum tracks of International Development or Chinese Public Affairs.

International Development
The International Development track explores four pivotal areas of development-management, social sciences, natural sciences, and health science in order to improve students’ ability to identify and address the challenges of sustainable development.

Chinese Public Affairs
Chinese Public Affairs track aims to train students to become specialists in China’s development practice. Students can choose up to 7 concentration courses focused on all aspects of China, such as politics, law, society, economics, culture and philosophy.

In order to give students opportunities to gain first-hand experience of integrated development approaches in a real-world context, the MID Program enhances the “Practice Component” by organizing events that will complement the students’ fieldwork, such as site visits, meetings, lectures, and other academic events.

Internship. It is a required component of the curriculum and offers valuable work experience in a novel environment.

Field trips. Daylong trips during the academic semesters and weeklong trips during the academic breaks will be offered in the duration of the course.

Guest Lecture Series. It consists of a series of guest lecturers allowing students to exchange ideas with elite scholars and practitioners.

Since 2007, the MID program has been a tremendous success in educating development practitioners around the world. 171 MID students have come from 46 countries with diverse backgrounds. An enriching global alumni network, including 133 MID students who have graduated and committed themselves to careers in international organizations, governments, NGOs, foundations and enterprises, has been established.
